Not everyone’s convinced Brock Purdy is worth the $265 million extension the 49ers handed him this spring — but Trent Williams isn’t here for that conversation.
The All-Pro left tackle made his stance clear Tuesday when asked about Purdy’s new five-year deal, which includes $181 million guaranteed. While outside voices like former wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh have questioned the price tag, Williams sees something different: the heart of San Francisco’s offense.
“He is the guy for this team,” Williams said. “He is the guy for this franchise. This is just the tip of the iceberg. He is going to get another contract. He’s going to win a lot of football games. He’s that good of a player.”
That’s more than praise — that’s belief coming from one of the league’s most respected linemen.
Since stepping in as a rookie in December 2022, Purdy has gone from Mr. Irrelevant to nearly leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory. And while some critics still paint him as a “system QB” thriving under Kyle Shanahan’s elite play-calling, Williams has had a front-row seat to everything Purdy brings — poise, accuracy, leadership, and toughness.
It’s why Williams isn’t concerned that other teams reportedly didn’t make a strong push to trade for Purdy, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted earlier this offseason. In his eyes, San Francisco already has the right guy. And he’s more than earned the bag.

“You talk about a Cinderella story,” Williams added. “A guy going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making $50 million a year — it’s astronomical. And it couldn’t have happened to a better guy.”
For Williams, it’s not just about dollars. It’s about what Purdy represents — a steady, relentless leader who never flinched when thrown into one of the NFL’s most demanding systems.
And it’s not lost on the locker room. While the headlines may debate Purdy’s ceiling, the guys who take the field with him every week aren’t wondering. They’re preparing to run it back with their quarterback fully locked in — and now fully paid.
The next chapter begins Sept. 7 when the 49ers open the season on the road against the division rival Seattle Seahawks. And with weapons like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle back in the huddle — and Williams on the blind side — Purdy’s got everything he needs to prove the doubters wrong again.
