Shaq Barrett, the veteran edge rusher, is making headlines with a bold move to return to the NFL after only a few months of retirement.
Barrett, who announced his retirement in July, is now seeking to re-enter the league, according to his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.
The 31-year-old has officially filed for reinstatement from the NFL’s reserve/retired list, signaling his desire to get back on the field.
However, Barrett’s potential return is complicated by his previous stint with the Miami Dolphins, who still hold his contractual rights following his retirement.
This creates a challenge for Barrett, as Miami would need to release him before he could rejoin the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team he has been associated with for the majority of his career.
While Barrett’s love and respect for the Bucs organization is very well know, there is plenty of speculation that he could suit up for the red-hot Dolphins who have found their way back into the playoff hunt.
When Barrett initially retired, he seemed resolute in his decision, calling it “the clearest choice” he had ever made.
But just a month later, he started to drop hints about a possible return to the NFL.
Barrett’s legacy in Tampa Bay is undeniable.
Over five seasons with the Bucs, he tallied 45 sacks, earned two Pro Bowl selections, an All-Pro nod in 2019, and played a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl LV victory.
His remarkable impact on the team has solidified his place as a Bucs legend.
Now, the decision lies with the Dolphins.
For Barrett to rejoin the Buccaneers, or any other team for that matter, Miami would need to grant him his release.
But again, maybe Mike McDaniel and company have plans to welcome him back into the fold in Miami.
What are your thoughts on Barrett’s desire to unretire? … How much does he have left in the tank???
