With a roster that includes weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Rodgers’ former Packers teammate Aaron Jones, the fit on paper made sense.
Rodgers knows the NFC North well, and he’s no stranger to success in high-powered offenses. But according to reports, Minnesota is not currently interested in pursuing the veteran quarterback.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell made it a point to keep McCarthy informed throughout the brief wave of speculation. “I do see him every day throughout the week, and I thought it was important that he was hearing it from me,” O’Connell said, per Alec Lewis of The Athletic. The reigning NFL Coach of the Year is clearly invested in building a strong foundation with McCarthy, both on and off the field.
The Vikings made their intentions clear when they traded up one spot to No. 10 in the 2024 NFL Draft to secure the Michigan standout. They wanted to eliminate any possibility of another team, such as the Broncos, leapfrogging them for McCarthy. Minnesota believes McCarthy’s football IQ and experience under Jim Harbaugh give him the tools to thrive in O’Connell’s system.
Minnesota’s transparent communication and decision to pass on Rodgers, at least for now, reinforces their confidence in the 21-year-old. It’s a major mental boost for a young quarterback preparing to make his NFL debut. The organization is sending a message: McCarthy is our guy.
How high J.J. McCarthy can take the Vikings remains to be seen. But if nothing else, he’s been given the green light to lead the way starting next season. The spotlight is his, and the Vikings are betting big on their new QB to rise to the occasion.
