The investigation into the unfortunate golf cart-related death of Jeff Sperbeck, the cherished business associate and former agent of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, has reached its conclusion. Authorities in Riverside County, California, have officially deemed the incident an accident.
Sheriff Chad Bianco conveyed to Denver’s 9News that, “It’s over. We’ve talked to everyone involved, and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal; it was what we’ve been saying all along, that this was a tragic accident.”
Sperbeck’s death, occurring on April 26, was the result of injuries sustained from a fall off the back of a golf cart. The incident, which involved Elway as the driver, took place at a private golf community in La Quinta, California. Following the accident, medical teams quickly responded, rushing Sperbeck to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition but, tragically, did not survive.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is poised to release an official statement in the coming days, confirming the closure of the investigation. The coroner’s bureau has ruled that Sperbeck’s death was due to blunt force trauma and classified it as an accidental event.
Sperbeck, well-known for managing Elway’s business ventures during the latter’s playing days with the Denver Broncos, had a longstanding relationship with him. Their professional journey includes co-founding the 7Cellars Winery in 2013.
Expressing his sorrow, Elway shared his heartbreak over the loss of a close friend: “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”
