Eric Bieniemy’s trajectory as a football coach has taken a dramatic turn since his days with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bieniemy, who helped guide Kansas City to multiple Super Bowl victories alongside head coach Andy Reid, was once regarded as a prime candidate for NFL head coaching jobs.
But in recent years, his fortunes have taken a downturn, leading many to question what went wrong and what lies ahead for the embattled coach.
After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy sought to prove he could thrive without the Chiefs’ system.
His decision to part ways was widely seen as a move to demonstrate his capabilities outside of Andy Reid’s shadow. Unfortunately, the results have told a different story.
Bieniemy served as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, a tenure that ended with disappointing results.
He then transitioned to the collegiate level, taking on the role of offensive coordinator for UCLA.
The Bruins’ offense, however, struggled mightily under his leadership, ranking 126th nationally. The team finished with a 5-7 record and missed bowl eligibility.
Today, UCLA made the decision to fire Bieniemy…
Now unemployed, Bieniemy finds himself at a career crossroads and many are wondering if a return to Kansas City might be in the cards.
Despite parting ways professionally, Bieniemy and Reid remain on good terms.
Reid even invited Bieniemy to speak to the Chiefs before last season’s AFC Championship Game, a contest Kansas City went on to win of course.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes also spoke highly of his former offensive coordinator, expressing admiration for the energy and passion he brings to the game.
“It’s always great to have EB in the building,” Mahomes said at the time. “Just being there, the energy that he brings, the mentality that he brings, you can feel because he has that intensity, but he loves it.
“He loves being there, he loves being a part of the team and being a part of that culture. Just having him back in the building was really cool; listening to him talk, his energy. I think guys had a little bit of chill bumps, like, ‘Hey, EB’s back here.’
“Obviously, he didn’t get that head-coaching opportunity, but I’m excited for him to continue to coach football and to continue to make his impact on the game.”
Despite the setbacks, Bieniemy’s coaching acumen and fiery passion for the game suggest his story isn’t over yet.
While his recent struggles have dimmed the once-bright spotlight on his career, a strategic move – perhaps back to Kansas City in some capacity – could help rehabilitate his reputation.
What are your thoughts on Bieniemy? … Should Reid and the Chiefs bring him back to Kansas City???
