DK Metcalf’s time in Seattle may have been more turbulent behind the scenes than fans realized.
According to a report from ESPN’s Brady Henderson, the star wide receiver requested trades from the Seattle Seahawks multiple times over the past few offseasons. While the specifics of each request haven’t been publicly detailed, the latest offseason saw Metcalf reportedly express interest in playing elsewhere — specifically with the Houston Texans or Los Angeles Chargers.
Henderson notes that Metcalf had no interest in joining the New England Patriots, a team often in the mix for wide receiver help. That detail adds an intriguing wrinkle to the trade rumors swirling around Metcalf in recent months.
Metcalf, 26, was one of the most explosive wideouts in the NFL during his time in Seattle. Known for his freakish athleticism and highlight-reel plays, he totaled over 6,000 receiving yards and 50 touchdowns in his first five seasons. But as the Seahawks transitioned into a new era post-Russell Wilson, it appears Metcalf may have wanted a fresh start, too.
His preferred destinations make sense. Houston is a team on the rise with young quarterback C.J. Stroud and a high-octane offense. The Chargers, meanwhile, boast Justin Herbert and a pass-first system that could feature Metcalf’s vertical skills.
Seattle eventually traded Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason, where he signed a four-year, $132 million contract extension to become their new WR1. Whether that was one of his top choices remains unclear, but the fit on paper alongside George Pickens — unless he’s traded — gives Pittsburgh one of the most physically imposing receiver duos in the league.
Now in Pittsburgh, Metcalf has a chance to reestablish himself as a true No. 1 in a new system. But if the recent reports are any indication, the saga surrounding DK Metcalf’s landing spot may not be over just yet.
