Did The Dallas Cowboys Just Get Their ACTUAL Franchise Quarterback?

The Dallas Cowboys might not be done making headlines this offseason, but according to the internet, they’ve already pulled off the most shocking move of them all: trading for their franchise quarterback.

Well, kind of.

A viral tweet from the “Pardon My Take” podcast account showed a photo of former New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III in action, with the caption: “The Cowboys just traded for their franchise QB.” The internet, as expected, had a field day.

In reality, the Cowboys acquired Milton as a backup after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Milton, a sixth-round pick by the Patriots in 2024, impressed in a Week 18 start against the Buffalo Bills, throwing for 241 yards and two total touchdowns. That one-game sample size—and his rocket arm—generated enough intrigue for Dallas to bring him in behind Dak Prescott.

So, is he actually the “franchise quarterback” of the Cowboys’ future?

Let’s pump the brakes.

Milton has yet to start a full season at the NFL level and enters Dallas as a developmental piece. He has the physical tools—elite size, arm strength, and mobility—but consistency and decision-making are still big question marks. And of course, as long as Dak Prescott is healthy and in a Cowboys uniform, he’s the guy.

Still, the Cowboys needed depth at QB, and they got it. Whether this turns into a diamond-in-the-rough success story or just a solid insurance policy remains to be seen.
