The Cleveland Browns had a tough season after showing promise in 2023, sliding back to a disappointing 3-14 record and missing the playoffs once again. It might have been another forgettable year for the team, but if you’re looking for a silver lining, cornerback Denzel Ward is it.
Ward stood out as a rare bright spot in the Browns’ defense, which otherwise struggled, giving up an average of 342.1 yards per game. Ward’s stats were impressive: 49 combined tackles, a league-leading 19 pass deflections, two interceptions, as well as a forced fumble and fumble recovery. His performance caught the eye of NFL fans and fellow players alike, including Cincinnati Bengals’ star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
Chase didn’t hold back his praise for Ward on an episode of “The Sitdown w/ Malik Wright,” calling him the toughest cornerback he faces. “It’s easy. I mean, Denzel,” Chase stated, emphasizing their frequent matchups and Ward’s skills. “He has great feet. He knows leverage, he knows splits. He’s one of the best I like playing (against).”
Coming from Chase, who led the league last season with a triple crown of receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, that’s no small compliment. Grant Gordon from NFL.com highlighted how Chase’s productivity has dipped when matched up against Ward. In the five games Ward played against him, Chase managed 32 receptions on 51 targets for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Those aren’t bad numbers, but they’re not the dominance Chase usually exhibits.
Despite being named to his fourth Pro Bowl last season, Ward isn’t resting on his laurels. He remains hungry for improvement, specifically targeting a need to increase his interceptions, demonstrating his relentless commitment to excellence. For Browns fans, Ward’s drive and talent serve as a beacon of hope for better seasons ahead.
