The Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves navigating a mix of success on the field and distractions off it.
Taking it a step further, quarterback Baker Mayfield’s personal and legal issues are looming large, following his decision to file a $12 million lawsuit against his father’s company.
According to reports, Mayfield has initiated legal action against Camwood Capital Management Group and its subsidiaries.
The lawsuit alleges that the company, owned by his father, James W. Mayfield, failed to meet the terms of a settlement agreement involving a repayment plan exceeding $12 million.
Baker’s brother, also a co-owner of Camwood, is tied to the dispute.
Adding to the complexity, Mayfield’s wife and the couple’s business, Team BRM, LLC, are listed as plaintiffs in the case.
The timing is noteworthy, as Mayfield recently inked a three-year, $100 million contract with the Buccaneers, which includes $50 million in guaranteed money.
Despite this lucrative deal, the quarterback appears intent on resolving the financial impasse with his family.
On the field, Mayfield continues to perform at a high level for Tampa Bay.
In their dominant 30-7 win over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium last Sunday, Mayfield flashed his brilliance.
He completed 24 of 30 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown. He also took the opportunity to mock Tommy Cutlets and the Big Blue faithful.
“Tribute to Tommy (DeVito),” Mayfield said of the celebration. “He’s a good dude, that’s why. Most of the time, I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s spontaneous.”
Mayfield is having a tremendous season as his career resurgence continues.
He’s thrown for 2,799 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, as the Buccaneers sit at 5-6, holding second place in the NFC South.
As the majority of the NFL world knows, the Bucs are a whole lot better than their record currently indicates.
Unfortunately for Mayfield, it seems the legal battle with his family is only getting uglier.
What are your thoughts on the sad story???
