Trevon Diggs is heading into the second season of a hefty five-year, $97 million contract extension he inked back in 2023. But interestingly enough, his choice to ease up on offseason workouts this year will shave a bit off his earnings, costing him a sliver of that mammoth deal.

The Dallas Cowboys decided to exercise a specific clause in Diggs’ contract, hitting him with a $500,000 penalty. This deduction is tied to his decision not to hit the mark of participating in at least 84 percent of offseason workouts. Although Dallas had the flexibility to overlook this clause, they opted not to, according to reports. It seems Diggs has been mostly focusing on his injury rehab away from the Cowboys’ facilities—an important detail as he works towards recovery.

Once a second-round draft pick in 2020, Diggs quickly validated that decision by securing Pro Bowl selections in 2021 and 2022. His momentum was unfortunately halted when he tore his ACL during practice after just two games in 2023, limiting his appearances last season to 11 games. To compound his challenges, he had to undergo another knee procedure.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys are gearing up to kick off the 2025 regular season against the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, on September 4. The burning question, though, is whether Diggs will be ready to take the field on that day—a question that still lingers as the date approaches.

The Cowboys are keenly aware that a fit Diggs is central to their playoff aspirations. In his absence, DaRon Bland emerged as a breakout star, earning both First-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. But his own 2025 season was curtailed to only seven games. If both Diggs and Bland can stay healthy for 2025, the Cowboys could very well boast one of, if not the league’s premier cornerback pairing. With gaps on defense, Diggs’ presence on the field is crucial if Dallas aims to bounce back from last year’s unremarkable 7-10 finish.
