Brock Purdy is in line for a significant contract extension this offseason, but the San Francisco 49ers may not be prepared to make a large financial commitment just yet.
Since taking over as the starting quarterback for the 49ers late in the 2022 season, Purdy has been nothing short of spectacular.
The former Mr. Irrelevant (think he’s sick of hearing that?) out of Iowa State has completed 67.5% of his passes for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions.
He’s showed tremendous toughness battling through injuries and nearly led the Niners to a Super Bowl title over the Chiefs two seasons ago.
Despite his success in San Francisco, ESPN’s Adam Schefter expressed uncertainty about whether a deal will be reached.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter discussed the potential for a large payday for Purdy, but noted several key factors in play.
“I think Brock Purdy certainly could [make $50 million per year], but that’s a question if they get that deal done,” Schefter said.
“Brock Purdy obviously is going to want to get a deal and the Niners would want to get a deal done, but the issue is he’s scheduled to make $5.1 million this season. He then could be tagged after next season for $41 million. He could be tagged the season after that for $51 million.”
While Purdy’s future remains up in the air, reports emerged that the 49ers had offered him a contract worth $45 million per year.
That figure has sparked backlash from some of the team’s fans, who believe it doesn’t reflect Purdy’s value to the franchise.
One fan vented frustration on X: “I hate us … Give him the 55.”
Another added: “They almost ended his career early because of a bad offensive line. I think they owe him more.”
A third fan voiced their displeasure with the low-ball offer: “Purdy said don’t slap me in the face with that nonsense.”
For Purdy’s camp, the $45 million offer seems underwhelming, especially considering that other quarterbacks in the league are earning far higher salaries.
However, it’s worth noting that Purdy has yet to earn significant money in his career. While the $45 million figure might be seen as a low-ball offer by many, it would still be a game-changing amount for Purdy and his family.
However, he’s entitled to go after every dollar he feels he’s worth. It’s up to the Niners to decide just how much they value him.
In reality, Purdy seems like the type of guy who won’t fight tooth and nail for every penny he can get. He seems like he may be fine taking a little less if it means helping the team.
Having said that, how should he feel about being offered $45 million per year. After all, he’s certainly worth well more than that.
With the talk of the 49ers potentially eyeing other quarterback options, could we one day soon see Purdy hit the open market???
