While the spotlight initially shone on veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who was notably absent from the Atlanta Falcons’ opening day of OTAs, the team’s new starter, Michael Penix Jr., quietly demonstrated the qualities that could define his leadership. After a rookie season spent learning under Cousins, it’s clear that Penix has seized the moment to establish himself as the undisputed QB1.
Head Coach Raheem Morris weighed in, highlighting how Penix is “finding his voice” in this pivotal offseason. The quarterback’s journey involves a progression from humility to confidence, ultimately aiming for the commanding presence that comes with mastering the role. “When you take over that quarterback spot, there’s a certain humility about playing the position,” Morris explained. “Then, it becomes a certain confidence about playing the position. Eventually, it transforms into a little bit of an arrogance where it becomes non-negotiable. We’re not there yet. I don’t think we will be for a little bit, but I think he’s starting to gain the confidence needed to reach that level.”
Penix’s rookie year, spent primarily watching from the sidelines as he observed Cousins, has prepared him for a critical chance to lead now that the team has decided to part ways with the struggling veteran. At just 25 years old, Penix expressed enthusiasm for stepping into this new role. “I’m excited to take on that leadership role,” he said.
One significant area where Penix aims to excel is in building relationships with his teammates, emphasizing that connection fuels success on the field. “The one that I want to point to is just connecting with the guys,” he noted. “I feel like I’ve done a lot better with connecting with everybody around the team. Not just the offensive guys but the defensive guys as well. Whether that’s just around the facility, eating lunch, or going out and playing golf with some of them – don’t ask about my golf game.”
As Penix embarks on this journey, the blend of eagerness and newfound confidence will be vital as he navigates the complexities of leadership in the quarterback position. With the right mix of camaraderie and authority, he has the potential to take the Falcons to new heights in his second season.
