As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, much of the attention surrounding the quarterback position has been focused on top prospects like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
However, some teams are reportedly turning their gaze toward Louisville’s Tyler Shough as a potential diamond in the rough.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that Shough is a name to keep an eye on as someone who could see their stock sky-rocket at the draft creeps closer.
“Shough is a down-the-board quarterback name to watch as a potential riser ahead of the draft” in part because “scouts love his ability and instincts, and they point out that his injury history is more bad luck-related than chronic condition-related.”
Shough’s college journey has been marred by setbacks, including a broken collarbone and a serious ankle injury during his time at Texas Tech.
Despite those challenges, he played in 12 games for Louisville last season, showcasing his toughness and resilience.
However, the 25-year-old’s long college career raises questions about his potential ceiling as a pro.
Shough, who will turn 26 in September, is already older than the vast majority of his peers in the draft, having spent time at Oregon, Texas Tech, and finally Louisville.
With his rookie contract likely expiring when he is close to 30, some teams might hesitate to invest in a quarterback of his age, particularly for a long-term developmental project.
That said, Shough’s final season at Louisville was a strong one.
He completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, catching the attention of NFL scouts in the process.
Despite being on the older side for a draft prospect, Shough believes his experience is an asset.
Having spent several years in college football, including time at multiple programs, he sees his age as an advantage.
Shough revealed that decision-makers within the NFL haven’t expressed concern over his age and that all of the doubts seem to be coming from the media.
“Not from coaches or NFL personnel. Only from the media,” Shough said of his age concerns. “More than anything, just letting them know it’s been an advantage for me.”
Shough points out that he’s married and has a family life that allows him to fully focus on football. He credits his wife for helping him balance his personal and professional lives, which has made him a more focused player.
“It changes your perspective,” Shough said. “She helps me out, even learning the playbook, and I’m kind of in debt to her more than anything.”
Looking ahead, Shough believes that even in his mid-20s, he has plenty of football left in him.
The success of quarterbacks playing deep into their 30s, and even thriving later in their careers, gives him confidence in his longevity.
“You see quarterbacks playing well into their 30s, even better ball late in their 30s,” he said. “More than anything it’s kind of helped me.”
As the 2025 draft nears, it’s clear that Tyler Shough is a prospect to watch – one whose experience, leadership, and ability to perform could make him a valuable option for teams looking for a reliable quarterback with untapped potential.
What are your thoughts on Shough as an NFL prospect?
There was a time not too long ago where most of the league would hold his age against him. But with the way things have changed, should his age and experience actually be viewed as a positive instead???
