As contract talks between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys continue to develop slowly, the All-Pro linebacker is keeping his focus on football – and his presence around the team.
Parsons has participated in early offseason activities, signaling a commitment to the team despite lingering uncertainty surrounding a potential contract extension.
With negotiations ongoing and little visible progress, some have speculated whether he might eventually follow the lead of wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who held out of training camp last year due to the lack of a new deal.
Speaking at the Annual Reliant Home Run Derby, Parsons made it clear that while securing an extension before training camp is a priority, he still plans to be present with the team – contract or not.
“I’ll still be around,” Parsons said. “For me, I’ve still gotta learn a playbook and I’m not so much of an iPad person where I can just keep learning, like I gotta walk through it.
“Maybe it’s so much I might not be on the field part of it, but I’ll be there learning, so that way I’m at least getting prepared to be ready for Week 1.”
The Cowboys are preparing for a fresh era under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, and Parsons’ involvement, even in a limited capacity, could prove crucial as the defense transitions into a new scheme.
The exact role Parsons will play during training camp in Oxnard, California remains unclear and could depend heavily on the status of contract discussions between his agent, David Mulugheta, and Cowboys executives Jerry and Stephen Jones.
So far, Parsons has struck the right balance – showing up, staying engaged, and saying the right things as one of the emerging leaders of Brian Schottenheimer’s revamped coaching regime.
But the longer negotiations drag on, the more questions are likely to arise – especially with potential figures hovering around $200 million over five years, according to league insiders.
Still, Parsons’ commitment to being present, even amid uncertainty, stands out in an era when many players in similar situations choose to hold out.
Whether he takes every rep or spends time on the sideline learning, Cowboys fans can count on seeing No. 11 this summer and beyond.
What are your thoughts on the way Parsons is dealing with his ongoing contract situation???
