Steelers Set To Lose Justin Fields To Surprising Team

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a bold approach last offseason, signing quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, each on one-year deals.

The decision was a calculated risk, placing a clear timeline on the team’s long-term quarterback strategy.

While the move has largely paid off thus far, it leaves Pittsburgh with questions about the future.

Fields contributed to the Steelers’ strong 4-2 start, and Wilson was red-hot through the first seven weeks, propelling the team to double-digit wins and securing a spot in the AFC playoffs.

However, Wilson has since cooled, with three consecutive losses that effectively handed the division to the Baltimore Ravens.

Despite the favorable results from both quarterbacks, the Steelers still face uncertainty about who will lead the team in 2024.

Wilson’s early-season form hinted at a possible long-term fit for Pittsburgh. Yet, as his performance waned, the question of an extension or franchise tag looms large.

If Wilson fails to make a strong case in Week 18 and the Wild Card Round, the Steelers could find themselves back to square one, especially if Fields opts to leave.

Fields’ success in Pittsburgh has already sparked interest from other teams. New York Post columnist Brian Costello speculated about Fields potentially landing with the New York Jets.

“I think the Jets are going to move on from Rodgers,” Costello said. “I don’t think they’ll be drafting high enough to take a quarterback in the first round.

“They could have Tyrod Taylor as their bridge quarterback. Or they could try to find the next reclamation project. When looking through first-round picks from recent drafts who may be able to put it together in the right situation, one name jumps out to me – Justin Fields.”

With Fields’ ability to thrive in the right system, the Jets could present an appealing opportunity, especially if paired with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who has been rumored as a candidate for New York’s head coaching role.

The Jets boast some solid offensive pieces, although many of them have underperformed this season.

Fields has proven his value during his time in Pittsburgh, but he isn’t obligated to return as a backup if the team prioritizes Wilson or another option.

Testing the free-agent market for a starting role makes sense for Fields, with Gang Green standing out as a potential destination.

Regardless of where Fields lands, his stint with the Steelers will be regarded as a success by many. Although his time under center has been relatively limited.

What are your thoughts on Fields as a quarterback?

How much stock do you put into the reports that the Jets could be gearing up to make a run at him in free agency???
