The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a pivotal offseason at the quarterback position, with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to hit free agency.
After being cast off by their previous teams, Wilson and Fields helped lead Pittsburgh to the playoffs last season, reviving their careers under head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Now, with both signal-callers possibly on the move, the Steelers are reportedly exploring other options.
According to Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan host Andrew Fillipponi, the Steelers have expressed interest in former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
“Source: There’s interest in former Giants QB Daniel Jones inside the Steelers organization,” Fillipponi reported on X.
“Quote: “[The Steelers] could do a lot worse than Jones.” With the belief he actually is a good fit for Arthur Smith’s offense. And Mike Tomlin’s preference for a mobile quarterback.”
Jones would be another reclamation project for Pittsburgh, but his situation differs from both Wilson and Fields.
Wilson, a Super Bowl champion, is nearing the twilight of his career and looking to prove he can still play at an elite level.
Fields, a young and talented dual-threat quarterback, is searching for stability after an up-and-down tenure with the Chicago Bears.
Jones, 26, falls somewhere in between – he has experience leading a team to the playoffs but has struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout his career.
Originally selected sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones showed promise when he led New York to its first playoff appearance in six years during the 2022 season.
That success earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension, but injuries and poor play derailed his Giants tenure.
After tearing his ACL in 2023 and getting benched in 2024, New York cut ties with him in late November.
He finished the season with the Minnesota Vikings – the same team he defeated in the 2022 postseason.
The Steelers have yet to publicly commit to a direction at quarterback, but with Wilson and Fields testing the market, they may need to act quickly.
While Jones is much better than people think and would thrive in the right situation, it seems like the vast majority of Steelers fans would like to see Fields as the permanent starter in 2025.
Unsurprisingly, the reaction to the Jones report was quite harsh…
“I promise y’all this is where I draw the line we sign him you will not see me supporting them next season,” a fan posted on X.
“He’d be lucky to thrive for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the XFL,” another fan added.
“So finally, the Steelers are looking to get to the top of the draft,” said another.
“This is the worst possible move they could make and i am all for it,” a Lions fan joked.
“Signing Daniel Jones might actually be the best move out there because it’ll finally get the Steelers to that elusive 2-15 record we’ve all been hoping for with a great QB draft class in 2026,” a glass-half-full fan added.
As the offseason unfolds, the Steelers’ quarterback situation remains one of the league’s most intriguing storylines.
Will they bring back Wilson or Fields, or could Jones be the next quarterback to get a fresh start in Pittsburgh?
