Believe it or not, Bill Belichick may be hired as the new North Carolina Tar Heels coach any moment now.
It could happen tonight. It could happen tomorrow. Or it could all fall apart. Either way, things have gotten quite interesting to say the least.
Reports surfaced that Belichick shared a comprehensive 400-page “coaching bible” outlining his vision for the program.
FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz described the situation as “very fluid.” He clarified, citing multiple sources, that no deal has been struck, though conversations are very active.
CBS NFL Insider Jonathan Jones corroborated this, noting that while progress is being made, nothing has been finalized.
“There’s hope within the school a decision will come soon,” Jones posted on X. “A lot going on behind the scenes but it continues to appear that the ball is in Belichick’s court.”
Notably, neither Schultz nor Jones disputed the existence of the detailed “coaching bible.”
The document reportedly outlines Belichick’s desired structure for the Tar Heels football program, including payment plans, staffing expectations, and other operational specifics.
College football and NFL reporter Ollie Connolly detailed some of these demands, stating, “Belichick’s bible would require historic levels of investment from the school.”
“Includes salary minimums position by position and a willingness to hire two staffs: a coaching staff run by Belichick; a recruitment staff run by a sitting college GM – who would require a buyout.”
Connolly also reported that Belichick’s son, Steve, would have to be his successor whenever he decides to retire.
Belichick addressed the ongoing talks during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, where he confirmed discussions with UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts but refrained from providing specifics.
“We’ve had a couple of good conversations, so we’ll see how it goes,” Belichick said.
The Tar Heels’ head coaching position became available following the messy dismissal of Mack Brown a few weeks ago.
North Carolina finished the season 6-6, and Brown will not coach the team in its upcoming Fenway Bowl matchup against UConn on December 28.
According to reports, UNC’s board of trustees are pushing back on some of Belichick’s demands. We’ll see what becomes of that.
However, if this deal is indeed agreed to, it could potentially change college football forever.
You would most likely see many other programs start to hire “general managers” to handle all of the ins and outs that come with recruiting, NIL, and the transfer portal.
As Belichick stated, college football has become very similar to the NFL as far as it’s overall structure.
Although they’re not a major program, Stanford just hired Andrew Luck as their new football general manager. Belichick wants a similar operation in Chapel Hill.
Do you think this type of structure and approach will soon be the norm in college football?
More importantly, is BILL BELICHICK actually going to be named the new head coach at NORTH CAROLINA???
