The Los Angeles Rams had a game plan that put rookie running back Blake Corum in the spotlight for Week 18. With Kyren Williams taking a rest, Corum stepped up as the starter against the Seattle Seahawks, and Coach Sean McVay had laid out the intention for Corum to get substantial playing time.
Unfortunately, the anticipated performance was cut short. Corum exited with a forearm injury, as reported by Rams insider Sarah Barshop from ESPN, raising doubts about his availability for the rest of the game. Prior to his departure, the promising former Michigan Wolverine had managed just two carries for a total of 10 yards. With Corum sidelined, Ronnie Rivers took over rushing duties, tallying up 12 carries for 49 yards in a game that saw the Rams narrowly lose, 30-25.
Drafted in the third round of the 2024 draft, Corum’s development into a significant contributor was eagerly anticipated by the Rams. However, the injury has put his status for the upcoming postseason in question, as the Rams are set to host a Wild Card game.
Postgame, Coach Sean McVay delivered some unfortunate news, shared by ESPN insider Adam Schefter: Corum had indeed fractured his forearm. This injury presents a significant challenge for the Rams, thinning their options in the backfield as they head into the playoffs. With limited depth behind Pro Bowler Williams, the Rams may find themselves in a difficult position.
Corum had been L.A.’s second-leading rusher, racking up 197 yards this season. With Rivers primarily contributing to special teams and amassing a modest 51 rushing yards during the regular season, the Rams will need to think strategically about filling the gap left by Corum’s absence.
As the Rams navigate this setback, they might have to consider bringing in help from their practice squad or even venturing into the free-agent market. Undrafted rookie Cody Schrader has been waiting in the wings on the practice squad but was added to the active roster for the Seahawks game. His role could become more pivotal moving forward.
There’s also the potential option of exploring the free-agent landscape for reinforcements. Recently released running back Ezekiel Elliott, set free by the Dallas Cowboys just days before their season finale, could be an intriguing possibility for the Rams as they look to bolster their backfield for the playoff push.
