A whirlwind of wide receiver movement continued today, as Seattle Seahawks star D.K. Metcalf officially requested a trade following the team’s release of veteran Tyler Lockett.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Seattle’s front office met with Metcalf and both sides agreed to pursue a potential trade.
With just one season left on his current contract, the 27-year-old receiver is expected to draw significant interest on the trade market.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, any team acquiring Metcalf would need to either have a contract extension prepared or be willing to negotiate a new deal soon after.
Metcalf now joins Cooper Kupp as a high-profile receiver available via trade, following the San Francisco 49ers’ recent deal sending Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders.
Unlike Samuel, Metcalf has been a model of consistency, recording at least 900 receiving yards in each of his six NFL seasons, while surpassing 1,000 yards three times.
Last season, the two-time Pro Bowler finished with 992 yards, as Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerged as Seattle’s top receiving option.
With the Seahawks moving on from Lockett and now potentially Metcalf, the team is undergoing a significant transformation at wide receiver.
The market for Metcalf’s services is expected to be robust, as teams looking for an elite playmaker will likely line up with trade offers.
The 49ers’ trade of Deebo Samuel for a fifth-round pick provides a recent benchmark, but given Metcalf’s durability and production, Seattle will certainly seek a higher return.
Now, the focus shifts to which team will make a serious push for Metcalf – and whether the Seahawks will fully commit to a rebuild or retooling as they head into the 2025 season.
What are your thoughts on Metcalf requesting a trade? … Where do you think he will end up???
