The Houston Texans are making a strategic move to enhance their running back corps. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is set to sign veteran running back Nick Chubb, contingent on him passing a physical.
This buzz started on ESPN with Jeremy Fowler, who broke the news during SportsCenter, indicating that the Texans are keen on Chubb to complement Joe Mixon in their backfield. Fowler emphasized, “I was told that he’s hoping to sign here soon, and maybe he gets something done before a minicamp gets into a team.” However, the door isn’t completely shut for Chubb returning to the Cleveland Browns, albeit that possibility seems less likely given the team’s recent draft strategy, which included selecting multiple running backs.
The Browns added notable talent in the draft, taking Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson. With this influx of fresh legs, Chubb’s return to a potentially crowded Cleveland backfield might not be in the cards.
On the flip side, the Texans are looking to solidify their running game. Having Joe Mixon as the primary back is a significant advantage, but the team could benefit from a strong No. 2 option. Last season, their top backup, Dameon Pierce, recorded only 293 rushing yards and found the end zone twice, underscoring the need for a more effective second option.
Despite facing injury challenges in recent years—appearing in just 10 games over the past two seasons—Chubb’s last fully healthy campaign showcased his prowess, as he racked up an impressive 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. While it’s fair to question whether the 29-year-old can replicate those prolific numbers now, he certainly has the potential to be a dependable partner in the Texans’ backfield, bringing experience and capability to a team aiming to elevate its rushing attack.
If Chubb does make his way to Houston, he could provide the Texans with much-needed depth and veteran leadership, making this a noteworthy development as they head into the upcoming season.
