Netflix Announces Bombshell “Quarterback” News

After a brief detour into the world of wide receivers (and a tight end), Netflix’s hit football docuseries Quarterback is heading back to its roots.

Netflix confirmed today that the series will return in July with a brand-new season, once again profiling the lives of NFL quarterbacks.

The announcement came with a tongue-in-cheek twist – true to the show’s now-playful tradition.

The teaser video opens by teasing a season centered around mascots, set to dramatic music, before abruptly cutting to a puzzled Joe Burrow.

“Seriously?” Burrow asks, raising an eyebrow. “Mascots?”

Kirk Cousins follows with a skeptical look: “Netflix is really doing a season about mascots?”

Jared Goff chimes in dryly: “They don’t even talk.”

Burrow quickly dismisses the fake concept as “ridiculous,” prompting Cousins to propose a return to Quarterback.

“I’m in if you’re in,” Burrow offers.

“I’m in,” Goff replies, and with that, Season 2 is officially underway…

The upcoming season will spotlight Burrow, Goff, and Cousins – three quarterbacks with very different 2024 seasons, but plenty of compelling storylines.

Cousins, who was widely embraced by fans during the first season for his grounded personality and gritty performances, returns under different circumstances.

After throwing a career-high 16 interceptions in 14 games during his debut year with the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins was benched late in the season in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr.

That makes Cousins the second quarterback – after Marcus Mariota – to lose his starting job after appearing in the series while playing for Atlanta. (Penix may want to think twice if Netflix comes calling.)

Burrow, meanwhile, delivered a huge statistical season, leading the league with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns.

But despite the strong finish – Cincinnati won its last five games – the Bengals fell short of a playoff berth with a 9-8 record.

Viewers can expect to see the emotional highs and lows of a roller-coaster season – and likely insights into Burrow’s life off-the-field.

Then there’s Goff, who helped guide the Detroit Lions to a franchise-best 15-2 record.

Goff threw for 4,629 yards and a career-high 37 touchdowns, earning Detroit a top seed in the playoffs.

However, the team’s Super Bowl hopes were crushed in a shocking upset loss to the Washington Commanders at home in Detroit.

The show’s first season, released in 2023, followed Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota throughout the 2022 NFL season, offering fans an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at their lives on and off the field.

It became an instant hit, blending locker-room footage, family moments, and mic’d-up game action.

Last year, Netflix experimented with a spin-off, Receiver, which featured Justin Jefferson, Davante Adams, Deebo Samuel, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and George Kittle.

While Receiver was well received, many fans missed the raw intensity of tracking quarterbacks through the season.

Netflix, along with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, is now giving them exactly what they asked for.

The official release date for Season 2 hasn’t been announced, but with three intriguing QB’s leading the way, Quarterback is poised to deliver another binge-worthy chapter when it returns this summer.

What are your thoughts on Burrow, Goff, and Cousins being featured in Season 2? … If you could pick any three QB’s to participate, who would they be???
