Matthew Stafford’s Bizarre Situation Keeps Getting “Weirder”

The Los Angeles Rams and veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford could be heading toward an uncertain offseason, with trade rumors swirling and potential suitors – including the New York Giants – emerging.

Speculation about Stafford’s future ramped up when the 16-year veteran admitted he needed time to reflect on his career following the Rams’ playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Adding to the intrigue, NBC Sports’ Mike Florio pointed out a “weird vibe” between Stafford and the organization, citing financial complications as a major hurdle.

Stafford is set to earn $27 million in 2025, but his cap hit for the season is a staggering $50 million. That leaves the Rams in a tough spot financially.

“His cap number for 2025 is nearly $50 million,” Florio wrote. “Cutting him with a post-June 1 designation would result in a $26.67 million cap charge for 2026, with a $4 million guaranteed roster bonus owed to Stafford. Trading him before June 1 (and before the $4 million roster bonus comes due) would spark a $37 million cap charge.”

While the situation isn’t as severe as Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson contract fiasco, Florio still labeled it a “mess.”

The Rams could restructure Stafford’s contract to free up cap space, but at 37 years old, questions remain about how long he can continue playing at a high level.

“Although it’s not as dire as the Deshaun Watson debacle in Cleveland, the Rams have a mess. They could kick the cap can by extending his contract, but he’s 37. At what point will the Rams (who are young at most positions) pivot to someone more than a decade younger than Stafford?”

If Los Angeles decides to move on from Stafford, several teams could be in the market for an experienced quarterback.

The Steelers, Raiders, Browns, Titans, Giants, and Jets all have a need under center, with the Giants becoming a particularly interesting option due to their recent coaching hire of Stafford’s brother-in-law.

Meanwhile, the Titans could opt to take a different approach in the NFL Draft, potentially targeting standout prospect Travis Hunter rather than a quarterback, which would leave them in need of a veteran leader.

Despite the financial concerns, Rams head coach Sean McVay has been vocal about his appreciation for Stafford and what he has meant to the organization.

“I’m sure proud of the body of work, really proud of the way he’s played,” McVay said.

“I think the coolest thing you can say about Matthew is he shines the brightest on the biggest stages. When you look at the seven playoff games he’s played in since he’s been a Ram, he certainly gives you a chance every time you step out on the field, and for that I’m sure appreciative.”

Whether the Rams find a way to keep Stafford or decide to move on, his situation will be one of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason.
