The New York Jets have had full attendance at voluntary offseason workouts, according to head coach Aaron Glenn. That includes wide receiver Garrett Wilson – even as he eyes a long-term contract extension.
Despite entering a pivotal contract year, Wilson has been a fixture at the team’s sessions.
“I want to be part of something special,” Wilson said. “I don’t think a whole bunch of individuals makes something special. There’s a way you go about business when you love what you do.”
Wilson became eligible for a contract extension following the 2024 season.
He’s due to earn a $1.1 million base salary in 2025 and will carry a $6.54 million cap hit. The Jets still hold a fifth-year option on him for the 2026 season.
While nothing has been finalized, Wilson confirmed there have been preliminary talks about a deal.
For Glenn, who took over as head coach in January, it hasn’t taken long to recognize Wilson’s importance to the team’s offensive strategy.
“The one thing I’ve learned about Garrett is we need to get him the ball as much as possible,” Glenn said.
That’s exactly the kind of plan Wilson wants to hear – and he’s already focused on delivering.
“It makes me feel great,” Wilson admitted. “That’s my mindset – whatever I’m going to be a part of as far as the philosophy, I’ll be prepped for that.
“So to hear that, I’ve got to get my body ready, get on the same page with Justin [Fields], clean up my details. That’s awesome to hear but there’s a lot of stuff that comes with it that sparks in my head, too.”
Fields and Wilson were teammates at Ohio State, and the Jets are banking on that chemistry translating to the NFL level.
A productive reunion between the two could not only elevate the team’s offense, but also strengthen Wilson’s negotiating position.
Still, for now, Wilson’s focus appears to be on the field – not the contract table. However, his comments signal a clear commitment and dedication to a long future with Gang Green.
