The Dallas Cowboys are struggling through a lackluster 2024 season, currently sitting at 3-3 after a humiliating 47-9 blowout loss to the Detroit Lions on owner Jerry Jones’ birthday.
One key issue has been their inconsistent running game. Despite this, Jones remains adamant that not signing superstar running back Derrick Henry in the offseason was the right call.
During a recent interview, Jones reiterated his position, addressing the speculation that Henry could have solved the Cowboys’ rushing woes.
“Derrick is having a career year. I don’t know if he’d be having a career year in our situation,” Jones said. “We don’t run that type of offense at all… Derrick didn’t fit, principally due to managing the cap.”
This isn’t the first time Jones has addressed the Henry question.
Back in Week 3, after Henry’s dominant performance helped the Baltimore Ravens defeat Dallas, Jones defended the decision not to sign him.
Henry, currently leading the NFL in nearly every rushing category, is on pace for a season that rivals his career-best 2020 performance.
Cowboys fans have been left wondering what might have been if the team had brought him on board, but Jones maintains the team’s offensive scheme simply wouldn’t suit Henry’s talents.
Had Dallas signed the star running back, many believe they would have tailored their scheme around Henry’s strengths. But for now, Cowboys supporters can only imagine how their season might look with the powerhouse back in their lineup.
The Cowboys’ season has also been plagued by injuries, with star linebacker Micah Parsons being a notable absence.
Parsons has been sidelined since Week 4 with a high-ankle sprain, the longest absence of his career. His return could provide a much-needed spark for a defense that’s also dealing with injuries to key players like DeMarcus Lawrence and Marshawn Kneeland.
On Monday, Parsons provided an update on his status, hinting at a possible return soon.
“It’s still in the air, obviously there’s more than just me, I got to clear it with Britt, the coaches, the head coach,” Parsons said. “They want to make sure obviously there’s so many more games left and I come back for the best results. Sometimes it’s not always the players it’s the people the higher paid grade (that make the decision).”
Parsons, who has been a defensive force since entering the NFL in 2021, has been quieter statistically this season. With just one sack and 14 total tackles so far, he hasn’t had the same impact he’s used to.
Still, his potential return ahead of a critical Week 8 game against the San Francisco 49ers could be pivotal for the Cowboys as they attempt to turn their season around.
Getting back to Henry, what are your thoughts on Dallas’ decision to not pursue him in free agency? … Was it a mistake???
