The New York Giants recently addressed their quarterback situation by signing Jameis Winston. However, their pursuit of Aaron Rodgers remains active, leaving Russell Wilson in a precarious position as he continues searching for a landing spot.
According to Albert Breer of TheMMQB, the Giants’ addition of Winston does not rule out their interest in Rodgers but significantly reduces the chances of Wilson joining the team.
“As I understand it, the Giants’ decision to sign Jameis Winston will not impact their pursuit of Rodgers,” Breer revealed. “It does make signing Russell Wilson less likely though – I’m really not sure where Wilson finds a landing spot, given the current landscape.”
While the Giants explore their options, Rodgers recently visited the Pittsburgh Steelers’ facility, fueling speculation that they are the clear frontrunners to land him.
The situation presents a complicated dynamic for Wilson, who played for Pittsburgh last season. The Steelers have yet to indicate whether they are interested in a reunion, but if they strike out on Rodgers, they may have little choice but to bring Wilson back.
However, there are some insiders who feel like like the powers that be in Pittsburgh as simply done with Wilson and have no plans to bring him back no matter what happens with Rodgers.
Wherever Wilson ends up, he certainly won’t be promised a starting role.
Whether it’s in New York, Pittsburgh, or elsewhere, the veteran quarterback will find himself in an intense battle for the QB1 spot.
Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding the Giants’ true interest in Wilson. After signing Winston to a two-year deal, speculation arose that he was merely added as a backup and that New York was still keeping tabs on Wilson.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, there were discussions that Wilson could still be in play despite Winston’s arrival. (Throw in Tommy DeVito and what a quarterback room that would be, huh?)
At the same time, there have also been rumors that the Giants are not actively pursuing Rodgers, which would make Pittsburgh the likely destination for the four-time MVP.
The Steelers, in need of an experienced quarterback to lead their offense, may see Rodgers as the ideal fit – similar to the role Wilson filled last season, expect significantly better.
If Rodgers ends up in Pittsburgh, Wilson could find himself without many viable options.
A potential alternative is Cleveland, though the Browns are expected to draft a quarterback. Even if Wilson were to start the season as QB1, his role could be short-lived.
Wilson’s future remains uncertain, and as teams finalize their quarterback plans, he will need to make the best decision for his career. But with fewer options remaining, the veteran quarterback is running out of time.
As for Breer, he’s a well-connected insider, so his hint that Wilson could be left without a chair when the music stops is certainly worth paying attention to.
When it’s all said and done, where do you think Wilson ends up? … Is retirement a legitimate possibility???
