Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown faced a setback during Tuesday’s training camp, as he was carted off the field after an apparent right lower leg injury. The injury occurred in the back of the end zone, leaving fans and teammates concerned after he was seen limping before exiting the practice session in a cart.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation after practice, confirming that Brown sustained an ankle injury but expressing optimism: “I don’t think it’s too bad, but we’ll see.” This is a reassuring sign for the Chiefs, particularly given the potential impact of his absence on the team’s receiving corps.
Brown joined the Chiefs on a one-year deal this offseason, returning to the field after a challenging 2024 season during which he played in only two games due to a sternoclavicular injury. In his brief appearances last season, he managed to catch nine passes for 91 yards in the regular season, adding five more receptions for 50 yards during the Chiefs’ playoff push to Super Bowl LIX.
In his six-year NFL career, Brown has battled through significant injuries, managing to complete just one full season. His most productive year came in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens, where he notched 1,000 receiving yards, but his numbers have steadily declined since then.
The Chiefs are eager to see their newly formed wide receiver trio—Brown, along with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy—fully healthy as they gear up for the 2025 season. If Brown’s injury proves to sideline him for any time, fourth-round pick Jalen Royals could see an increase in playing time. Royals had a standout collegiate career at Utah State, earning First Team All-Mountain West honors after an impressive season with 71 receptions for 1,080 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2023. Although limited to just seven games last year due to a foot injury, his 119.1 receiving yards per game still ranked him third in the FBS, showcasing his potential to step up in a time of need for the Chiefs.
As the team navigates this early challenge, all eyes will be on Brown’s recovery and whether he will be ready to hit the ground running as the season unfolds.
