The days of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dominating the NFL together may be over, but both remain highly visible figures in the football world.
Brady, a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, has taken on a prominent role as the lead NFL analyst for FOX Sports.
Meanwhile, Belichick has kept busy with media appearances on various platforms, in addition to his surprising new role as head football coach at the University of North Carolina.
Despite their frosty past, the ice has seemed to have completely melted between the two future Hall of Famers.
As a matter of fact, Belichick made waves by proposing a bold idea during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio: renaming the Lombardi Trophy in honor of Brady.
“Maybe they should name it the ‘Brady Trophy.’ He won seven of them,” Belichick said.
For those living under a rock, the Lombardi Trophy, awarded annually to the Super Bowl champion, is currently named after Vince Lombardi.
Lombardi, widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, won the first two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers.
Changing its name would be a monumental decision for the league, and it’s one that would likely spark debate.
While some fans might embrace the idea of honoring Brady, others may resist the notion of replacing Lombardi’s name on the most prestigious award in football.
Nevertheless, Belichick’s argument carries weight given Brady’s unparalleled success, with seven Super Bowl victories over his illustrious career.
It should be noted that there are no plans in the works to make such a change.
While Brady’s name may find it’s way onto some sort of award in the future, it’s likely that the “Lombardi Trophy” will remain just that.
For Patriots fans, the idea of a “Brady Trophy” would undoubtedly be a welcome tribute to their beloved quarterback. (Can’t forget about you Bucs fans either!)
Whether the league ever takes the idea seriously remains to be seen…
What are your thoughts on Belichick’s interesting suggestion?
While on the topic of Brady-Belichick, did you think the two would ever turn the corner the way they seemingly have???
