Heartbreak in New Orleans: Tragedy Strikes Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs Family

Georgia coach Kirby Smart celebrates with his dad Sonny Smart after a NCAA college football game between Tennessee and Georgia in November.

The Georgia Bulldogs community is mourning the loss of Sonny Smart, father of head coach Kirby Smart, who passed away early Saturday morning.1 This news comes after a heartbreaking turn of events that began with a fall in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve.

Sonny, who was 76, fractured his hip in the fall and underwent surgery.2 Sadly, complications arose, and despite a valiant fight, he passed away surrounded by his family.

This loss casts a shadow over what has already been a difficult week for the Bulldogs. After the tragic events on Bourbon Street that led to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl, the team faced a tough loss to Notre Dame. Now, they grieve the loss of a beloved figure within their extended football family.

Sonny Smart was more than just a father to Kirby; he was a respected coach and mentor who instilled many of the core values that Kirby carries with him today. He coached high school football in both Alabama and Georgia, even coaching Kirby during his playing days at Bainbridge High.3

This is a devastating loss for the Smart family, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. The impact of Sonny Smart’s legacy will undoubtedly be felt throughout the Georgia football program and beyond.
