Two years after suffering a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles got their long-awaited revenge in Super Bowl LIX, delivering a commanding 40-22 victory on Sunday.
Unlike their previous meeting in Super Bowl LVII – where the Chiefs rallied from behind to edge out the Eagles 38-35 – Philadelphia wasted no time asserting dominance this time around.
The Eagles stormed out to a 24-0 halftime lead and never looked back, leaving Kansas City scrambling.
A pair of late touchdowns in the fourth quarter made the final score seem more respectable, but the game was never truly in doubt. As a matter of fact, the 40-22 final is one of the most deceiving scores in Super Bowl history.
For Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, the victory marked not only his first Super Bowl title but also a moment of vindication against those who doubted his ability to lead Philadelphia to the top.
Very few NFL coaches have been made fun of more than Sirianni. As a matter of fact, the constant mocking of him became a running joke on The Pat McAfee Show.
Speaking of the relentless criticism, longtime ESPN personality Tony Kornheiser called out his colleagues in the media for their handling of Sirianni over the past few years.
“I see these former NFL players go on the Get Up show and they say, ‘Nick Sirianni? You gotta fire him. Nick Sirianni is the problem.'” Kornheiser said on PTI.
“No, no, no, you’re the problem. Nick Sirianni is 48-20 and he’s been to two Super Bowls in three years. He hired great coordinators. (Vic) Fangio is a great coordinator. Kellen Moore, he lost him now but he’s a great coordinator. He appears to know what he’s doing.”
With a Super Bowl title now on his résumé, Sirianni has solidified himself as one of the top coaches in the league, and the narrative surrounding him is sure to shift.
However, with success comes new challenges.
The Eagles will head into the 2025 season as the team to beat, carrying a target on their backs as every opponent aims to dethrone the reigning champions.
Sirianni and the Eagles deserve the right to celebrate their Super Bowl title to the fullest. They will surely do so at their championship parade today.
However, the page soon must turn to next season with free agency and the draft right around the corner.
What are your thoughts on Kornheiser’s comments???
If we’re being honest, a large amount of Eagles fans weren’t exactly convinced that Sirianni was the answer either. Prior to Sunday, it’s not like Nick was universally beloved in Philly.
However, a Super Bowl title will surely change that. Just ask Doug Pederson. (Or not.)
Regardless, do you think the media has been way too harsh on Sirianni? … Is it possible that the man is an elite coach who knows exactly what he’s doing???
