The Philadelphia Eagles secured their second Super Bowl victory in just eight seasons, while the Dallas Cowboys continue to search for their first championship since 1995 – a year that also marked their last appearance in the NFC Championship Game.
For Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the Super Bowl matchup this year was a tough pill to swallow.
Jones saw Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, his neighbor in the AFC West, battle for a potential third straight Super Bowl title. To make matters worse, the Eagles – the Cowboys’ bitter NFC East rivals – took center stage as champions, leaving Jones and his franchise in their shadow.
The Cowboys are facing an uphill battle, with both the Eagles and the Washington Commanders now ahead of them in the division. (And the Giants could be soon acquiring Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp.)
However, despite the gap, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott expressed optimism that his team is closer to the Eagles than it may seem.
“I feel like we’ve competed with the Eagles and beat them for the most part when we’ve played them,” Prescott said. “I don’t want to say, ‘Check our record,’ when the other guy is holding the trophy, right. So, credit to them. They’ve earned it, and they deserve it by all means, but yeah, very close.
“Especially even watching the NFC Championship and those two teams, teams that we battle against each and every year a couple of times. As I said, I feel confident that we’ve gotten the better part each and every time. But just seeing such a dominating fashion [in the Super Bowl], credit to them. It’s our turn, and it’s on us.”
Prescott’s confidence in the team is supported by the record, which shows he has had a winning edge over the Eagles during his career.
With a 9-4 record against Philadelphia, Prescott has thrown for 24 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. Meanwhile, Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts has gone 3-3 against Dallas with nine touchdowns and five interceptions.
However, the two quarterbacks have faced off only three times since Hurts entered the league in 2020, and Prescott has a 2-1 edge in those matchups.
Despite Prescott’s optimism, the Cowboys’ journey to the top still faces considerable challenges.
Unless the team is willing to invest more in free agency, it may be difficult for Dallas to break free from its 29-year title drought and truly contend for a Super Bowl in the near future.
What are your thoughts on Dak’s comments? … Do you agree with him that Dallas isn’t THAT far off???
