The Dallas Cowboys’ passing game in 2024 has shown signs of being strikingly one-dimensional, a reality that must be addressed as they eye improvements for the upcoming season. CeeDee Lamb once again emerged as the clear leader in the Cowboys’ receiving corps, amassing an impressive 1,194 receiving yards, a feat that underscores his talent and the need for additional support around him. When the second-best wideout on the team, Jalen Tolbert, finishes with just 610 yards, it becomes evident that the Cowboys need to diversify their aerial attack.

As of now, the team hasn’t made any significant free-agent signings at the wide receiver position. Given the landscape of the offseason, pursuing a trade could be the ideal solution to bolster their receiving options. There’s still time for the Cowboys to make a move, and it appears that one potential target could be Courtland Sutton from the Denver Broncos.

In a recent call to action, sports analyst Landon Holifield proposed a strategic trade that could see the Cowboys exchange their 12th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft for the Broncos’ Sutton while moving back to the 20th pick. Holifield’s suggestion to secure Sutton would not only enhance the Cowboys’ receiving corps but would also provide them a shot at still landing a promising player, such as running back Omarion Hampton, later in the draft without sacrificing too much positional value.

However, trading for Sutton—who currently has an average annual salary of $20 million—complicates matters. The Cowboys are already deep into negotiations regarding Micah Parsons’ contract, and adding Sutton’s contract would require careful financial maneuvering. Yet, if Sutton, a 30-year-old receiver familiar with the rigors of inconsistent quarterback play, is keen on joining the Cowboys and can find a way to work within their financial structure, this could be an excellent match.

Sutton has demonstrated his capabilities with two 1,000-yard seasons and a Pro Bowl appearance in 2019, alongside a solid 1,081-yard, eight-touchdown performance in 2024. With the kind of production Sutton brings to the table, he could offer a significant upgrade to a Cowboys offense that desperately needs balance.

Yet, there’s always a twist in negotiations. The Broncos might have their eyes set on a player with immense potential at the 12th pick, which could make them hesitant to part ways with Sutton without getting a compelling return. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on the Cowboys to see if they can make a strategic move that not only enhances their receiving options but also builds a stronger foundation for the upcoming season.
