Cowboys Take Harsh Stance On Micah Parsons Contract Drama

The future of Micah Parsons in Dallas appears certain – eventually – but a long-term contract extension is still not in place. And according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, there hasn’t been recent movement.

Speaking to Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein, Jones admitted he hasn’t been in touch with his All-Pro edge rusher lately – but made sure to point out that Parsons is still currently under contract.

“I haven’t talked with him in about four or five weeks, and of course, that’ll be necessary if he’s going to get a [new] contract,” Jones said. “But he’s got a contract. That’s the point. Be sure and clear about that.”

Parsons, who turned 26 years old today, became eligible for an extension following the 2023 season.

He’s currently set to play under the fifth-year option, which will pay him $24 million in 2025. But the expectation remains that Parsons will ultimately land a new deal – one that could reset the market.

The Cowboys star is reportedly seeking a contract that surpasses wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s projected $40.25 million annual average, a figure that would make Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Despite his resume – 52.5 career sacks, four Pro Bowl selections, and two All-Pro honors in just four seasons – the Cowboys are once again taking their time, employing the same patient approach seen in other recent contract negotiations.

Last year, CeeDee Lamb skipped all of training camp before inking a four-year, $136 million extension less than two weeks before the season opener. Parsons may follow a similar path.

While he has made appearances at the voluntary offseason program, his participation has been inconsistent. With training camp rapidly approaching, his absence could become more noticeable – and more meaningful – if a deal isn’t finalized.

Though rumors have swirled about a possible “handshake agreement” between Parsons and the front office, nothing is official, and no timeline has been confirmed.

For now, Dallas fans – and the rest of the NFL – will continue to wait for one of the league’s most dominant defenders to get paid.

What are your thoughts on Jones’ comments?

We all know Jerry doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to taking care of these situations in a timely manner … At the end of the day, what do you think ends up happening with Parsons???
