The Kansas City Chiefs have reaffirmed their status as the NFL’s dominant force, opening their season with a perfect 7-0 record as they chase an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title.
The Chiefs’ consistent success, marked by their presence in four Super Bowls with three victories over the last six years, has made them the standard-bearer in the NFL.
At the helm of this historic run is head coach Andy Reid, the on-field architect of the Chiefs’ ongoing dynasty.
Now in his 12th season with Kansas City following a 14-year tenure in Philadelphia, the 66-year-old Reid appears as driven and focused as ever.
Despite his long career, retirement appears to be the last thing on Reid’s mind. According to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Reid is “absolutely” poised to lead the team for the foreseeable future.
“He certainly seems rejuvenated, I would say, by the success of the team in the last few years and having one of the most special quarterbacks of all time,” Hunt told ESPN. “I have no sense that he has any interest in retiring any time soon, which is fantastic.”
Hunt made sure to point out that the organization would be foolish to not at least plan for life-after-Andy.
“I think any leader needs to be thinking about succession … Eventually that day will come,” Hunt said.
While Reid’s leadership has been pivotal, Kansas City’s success rests on a roster filled with star power.
At the forefront is Mahomes, whose remarkable skills have transformed the Chiefs from a strong team into an all-time great one over the past six seasons.
If Mahomes keeps up his current pace, he’ll have a legitimate chance to catch up to – and possibly pass – Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
Meanwhile, defensive stalwart Chris Jones remains one of the most dominant players in the league. Likely destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Jones anchors a powerful defense that has a knack for coming up big in big spots.
Reid and his coaching staff have a special connection. The chemistry is often apparent. Look no further than the relationship he has with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo whose contributions to Kansas City’s success have been vital.
As for the future of Reid, Chiefs fans can rest assured that he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Or at least that’s the plan.
Having said that, being the smart owner that he is, Hunt is already spitballing possible succession plans in his head.
In other words, the Chiefs are going to be just fine, especially with #15 just entering his prime.
What are your thoughts on Hunt’s comments? … How many more years do you think we’ll see Reid on the Chiefs sidelines???
