Brandon Aiyuk finds himself at the center of trade discussions once again as the 2025 NFL offseason gains momentum. News out of the NFL Combine recently revealed that the San Francisco 49ers are actively fielding calls regarding a potential trade for the talented wide receiver.
Following the departure of Deebo Samuel, traded to the Washington Commanders, rumors persist that moving Aiyuk could align with the broader strategic goals articulated by general manager John Lynch at the Combine. Lynch has made it clear that the franchise is looking to shed some veteran weight and infuse the roster with youth, a statement that underpins the rationale for considering a deal involving Aiyuk.
One prominent candidate to facilitate such a trade is the Los Angeles Chargers, who find themselves equipped with both the draft capital and a strong need for a wide receiver like Aiyuk. This pairing makes sense, especially as the Chargers aim to further bolster their offensive capabilities.
However, trading Aiyuk isn’t without its complexities. The 49ers extended Aiyuk’s contract last season to a four-year, $120 million deal that includes $24.8 million guaranteed for 2025. This financial commitment complicates a potential trade, as San Francisco would need to identify a team willing to absorb that cap hit. If the deal were executed before April 1, the 49ers could sidestep a deadline for a significant option bonus due to Aiyuk.
John Lynch’s comments at the Combine emphasize the urgency of refreshing the team’s composition. “We need to get younger. I think we’re the oldest team in football after trying to make a run last year,” he stated. Lynch highlighted the potential for upcoming draft capital to facilitate this transition, mentioning that the 49ers could possess up to 10 picks overall if everything falls into place. This influx of picks could provide the 49ers with the ammo needed to address multiple needs as they venture into the draft.
For the Chargers, acquiring Aiyuk could be a game-changer. After a promising 2024 season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles is keen to elevate its offensive production. While Aiyuk is recovering from a torn ACL, his ability to stretch the field and make plays after the catch makes him an appealing target for quarterback Justin Herbert. Currently, the Chargers boast more than $50 million in cap space for 2025, giving them the financial flexibility to bring Aiyuk on board without compromising other necessary moves.
