In a move that has stunned the football world, legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick has agreed to become the head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football team.
The announcement follows months of speculation about Belichick’s next chapter after a Hall of Fame career in professional football.
Seth Wickersham of ESPN reported that Belichick had been linked to several NFL teams before settling on his surprising jump to college football.
However, it ended up being the Chicago Bears who may have had the best shot at Belichick – if they ever showed interest…
“According to sources with direct knowledge, the (Belichick) group deemed that the Chicago Bears were probably the most attractive job, but that team brass was unlikely to consider Belichick,” Wickersham reported.
Belichick had a hunch that the Bears are focused on going with an offensive-minded head coach to speed up the development of quarterback Caleb Williams.
The 72-year-old Belichick spent more than two decades as head coach of the New England Patriots, where he cemented his legacy with six Super Bowl championships.
After Patriots owner Robert Kraft decided to move on from Belichick, rumors swirled about his future.
While he’s spent this season wearing several broadcasting hats, it was widely understood that his plan was to get back into coaching.
Most people assumed he’d stay in the NFL … Maybe with his beloved Giants. Maybe Dallas. Maybe Philadelphia. Maybe Jacksonville. Maybe Las Vegas.
As it turns out, it was the Bears who most likely had the best shot at landing Belichick.
Unfortunately for Chicago fans who wanted him, the franchise didn’t seem to show any interest whatsoever.
Will the Bears end up regretting that decision???
