The Chicago Bears might have just pulled off the biggest move of the offseason by securing one of the most sought-after coaching minds in football – former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Despite intense competition and a potential rivalry roadblock, Johnson chose Chicago, where he’ll now be tasked with developing one of the most highly anticipated quarterback prospects in recent history, Caleb Williams.
Johnson’s reputation as an offensive mastermind skyrocketed after orchestrating one of the NFL’s most dynamic and creative attacks in Detroit.
His ability to maximize talent and design explosive plays made him the hottest name on the coaching market.
Now, he’s bringing that expertise to the Bears and is already raving about the rare skill set that Williams brings to the table.
“He can throw the ball so, so well,” Johnson told ESPN’s SportsCenter. “There were some throws he’s made on tape from last year, outside the numbers, on a rope, 20 yards down the field.
“That’s what certainly attracts your eyes but then you see the creation of plays, when things break down and he’s having to evade the rush and break the pocket and potential explosives down the field.
“That’s a little bit different dynamic than what I’ve been around and really, really excited to see where that can go for us.”
According to Johnson, Williams isn’t just an elite talent – he has the mindset and work ethic to become a franchise-altering quarterback.
Johnson emphasized that his new QB’s dedication and hunger to be great will be key in their success together.
“This is a guy that’s hungry, he’s smart,” Johnson added. “He wants to do extremely well. That’s what I’m really excited about. We’re going to get a very coach-able version of Caleb Williams and he just wants to be the best that he could possibly be.
“He wants to win a ton of games here in Chicago. I can’t wait for him to legally be able to get in the building and hit the grass with us.”
The Bears have been searching for stability and firepower at quarterback for years.
After landing Williams ahead of last season, things didn’t go as planned, but now with Johnson in charge, expectations are sky-high.
The fanbase spent all season hoping the Bears would bring in Johnson, and now that dream is a reality.
There are still plenty of challenges ahead, but with Johnson’s offensive creativity and Williams’ superstar potential, the Bears could finally be building something special in Chicago.
Of course, there were some fans who were quick to label Williams a “bust” due to his rocky rookie season.
However, Johnson has made it clear that he believes Williams has all of the tools needed to become a true top-shelf franchise quarterback.
What are your thoughts on Williams as Chicago officially turns the page to the Ben Johnson era???
