The Detroit Lions continue their reign of dominance in the NFL, showcasing their explosive offense with several blowout victories this season.
In recent weeks, Detroit overwhelmed the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 52-6 rout and crushed the Tennessee Titans 52-14 just three weeks ago.
Earlier in October, they handed the Dallas Cowboys a decisive 47-9 defeat.
The Lions’ incredible dominance, however, has raised questions about their approach late in games.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson addressed these concerns, clarifying that the team does not intentionally aim to disrespect opponents in lopsided contests.
What some have viewed as over-aggressive play-calling, Johnson views as priceless developmental opportunities for backup quarterback Hendon Hooker.
“I think it’s invaluable for him, going out there, you’ve got the lights shining on you, you’ve got people looking at you, it’s not practice setting,” Johnson said.
“Now we’re at a spot where he’s been able to get a few in games this year, and the challenge for me is I do want to get him some passes but also don’t want to be disrespectful to the opponent as well, so it’s kind of a balancing act when it comes to that.”
Hooker, the backup to Jared Goff, has seen limited action this season, completing six passes for 62 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions across three games.
Johnson’s comments highlight his effort to balance player development with respect for opponents, even in blowout scenarios.
Having said that, the NFL is a grownup’s league. It’s like the old saying goes: “If you don’t like what I’m doing, then stop it.”
While Johnson’s impact on Detroit’s offense is undeniable, his future with the Lions remains a topic of interest.
Since becoming offensive coordinator in 2022, Johnson has transformed the Lions into an offensive juggernaut.
The team boasts a 29-14 record during his tenure, with top-five finishes in total offense and points scored in the past two seasons. This year, Detroit ranks sixth in total yards and second in points per game.
Johnson has garnered significant interest for head coaching positions, but he has been selective in his considerations.
According to reports, Johnson is not pursuing head coaching jobs lightly, emphasizing alignment with the front office and the potential for long-term success as key factors in his decision-making process.
Despite turning down a promising opportunity with Washington, which included ample salary cap space and the chance to draft quarterback Jayden Daniels, Johnson’s name continues to surface in discussions about top coaching vacancies.
Speculation has linked Johnson to potential openings with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets.
The Lions, currently sitting at 9-1 and holding the NFC’s top seed, are poised for a deep postseason run.
They travel to Indianapolis this Sunday to face the Colts, who are fighting to stay in playoff contention at 5-6.
Kickoff is set for 1pm EST, with Detroit aiming to extend its dominance while continuing its balanced approach under Johnson’s guidance.
What are your overall thoughts on Johnson?
He’s clearly going to be ultra-picky when it comes to head coaching jobs … Which situation do you think he’d be most attracted to???
