Bears Will Land Clowney After He Was Cut By Carolina

The Carolina Panthers have made a notable decision by parting ways with pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney. While some may have anticipated this move following the Panthers’ recent draft additions of Nic Scourton and Princely Umanielen, it still evokes surprise. After all, Clowney could have played a crucial mentorship role for those emerging edge rushers.

Now a free agent, Clowney is poised to be one of the more intriguing pass rushers available on the market. For teams that didn’t quite fill their defensive line needs during the NFL Draft, adding Clowney could provide that critical boost they’re looking for—especially the Chicago Bears, who would stand to benefit significantly from his presence.

At 32 years old, Clowney isn’t the youngest player around, yet his wealth of knowledge and skillset is undeniable. Last season, he posted impressive numbers with 44 pressures and six sacks, bringing his impressive career totals to 508 pressures and 63 sacks. His effectiveness in pressuring quarterbacks and stopping the run remains evident, showcasing that he still has a lot to offer.

With Dennis Allen stepping in as the new defensive coordinator, the Bears are seeking additional edge rusher support beyond the current duo of Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo. While they already brought in Odeyingbo this offseason, the need for more experience is clear. Behind him and Sweat, the depth chart currently consists of Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy, which doesn’t offer the kind of rotational strength necessary for a formidable defensive line.

Bringing Clowney into the fold would not only provide Allen with added flexibility in his defensive schemes, but it would also enhance a unit that has had its share of struggles in consistently generating pressure. General Manager Ryan Poles has emphasized his desire for “waves of pass rushers,” and signing a player like Jadeveon Clowney could be pivotal in achieving that vision. With an experienced hand like Clowney in the starting rotation, the Bears could bolster their defensive presence, making them a team to keep an eye on as the free agency period unfolds.
