Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson has issued a public apology after his controversial taunting of Washington Commanders fans, which drew attention following his tipped Hail Mary pass, inadvertently assisting Commanders’ Jayden Daniels game winning touchdown to Noah Brown.
It was an ultra-embarrassing display of unprofessionalism by Stevenson – one that many Bears fans want him punished for.
“To Chicago and teammates, my apologies for lack of awareness and focus … The game ain’t over until zeros hit the clock. Can’t take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvement will happen. #Beardown,” Stevenson posted on X.
Yet despite Stevenson’s apology on social media, Bears receiver and team captain DJ Moore suggested the incident remains a point of concern within the team.
During a Monday morning interview on 670 The Score’s Molly and Haugh Show, Moore acknowledged that he and the other captains plan to discuss the matter with the team.
“I didn’t see it happening during the play,” Moore said. “I’ve seen it just how everybody else has seen it [on social media].
According to Moore, the Bears’ leadership feels it’s necessary to address the situation as a group.
“The captains were talking about how we need to really address that. I saw that he put something out that he was sorry, but we’ve still got to address it as a leadership group in front of the team.”
While Moore made it clear that he doesn’t see it as the captains’ role to determine any formal discipline, he emphasized the importance of discussing the incident.
“We can address it as captains, and upstairs will have to do what they’re going to do,” Moore said. “It’s a lesson learned, for sure. He won’t do that again. But if you bench him it’s just like, that one play – it’s a big play – but that one play doesn’t define him as a player.”
Moore’s comments highlight a shared sense of accountability among the team’s leadership, aiming to prevent similar situations while balancing support for Stevenson.
Of course, Moore and the entire team is going to have Stevenson’s back – at least publicly. Having said that, inexplicable mistakes like the one he made simply cannot happen.
What – if any – punishment do you think Moore should face from head coach Matt Eberflus???
