Haason Reddick may be on his way out of the New York Jets organization before ever taking the field for them.
According to multiple reports, the Jets have granted Reddick permission to seek a trade, with his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, already in contact with other teams over the last 12 hours.
This development marks a stark departure from the Jets’ previous stance in August when they publicly declared they would not move the star pass rusher, despite his request to be traded.
Back then, Jets general manager Joe Douglas issued a firm statement ensuring (at least at the time) that Reddick would not be moved.
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the (Collective Bargaining Agreement) if he does not report,” Douglas said. “Since the trade discussions back in March we have been clear, direct and consistent with our position.”
Reddick, acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, has yet to report to the Jets due to unresolved contract issues, specifically his desire for a multi-year extension.
He has one year remaining on his contract, with a base salary of $14.25 million, and has accrued over $9 million in fines for his absence.
The timing of this latest move is notable.
The Jets, now 2-4 after a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills, may be looking to recover some draft capital in exchange for Reddick or pressure him into reporting.
In addition, the team traded a conditional third-round pick, which could turn into a second-rounder, to acquire star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Raiders, further depleting their draft resources.
Jets owner Woody Johnson recently made a public appeal to Reddick, encouraging the linebacker to report to Gang Green.
“I hope that the young man can come to the team, we’d like to have Haason here. We’d welcome him with open arms,” Johnson said after firing Robert Saleh last week. “When he gets here, he’ll find a very welcome locker room and he’ll be able to fit right in, but he’s got to get here first.
“Haason, get in your car, drive down 95 and come to the New York Jets. We can meet you and give you an escort right into the building and you’ll fit right in, and you’ll love it here and you’re going to feel welcome. You’re going to accomplish great things with us.”

Reddick’s decision to hire Rosenhaus – the most prominent NFL agent known for securing high-profile deals – has added an interesting twist to the situation.
His previous agency, CAA, parted ways with him amid the contract standoff. Rosenhaus, however, has expressed hope for a resolution with the Jets.
