The Dallas Cowboys have officially announced Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach.
The decision to promote the veteran assistant comes after owner Jerry Jones put to bed the idea of retaining Mike McCarthy.
Now, Schottenheimer steps into the spotlight, marking his first head coaching role in the NFL.
Jones acknowledged the risk involved in hiring someone without head coaching experience during today’s introductory press conference.
“I’m still a risk taker,” Jones said, adding that the decision to hire Schottenheimer is “as big a risk as you can take.”
In response to rumors that swirled about potential candidates for the job, the Cowboys decisively chose Schottenheimer over higher-profile names.
Speculation since the McCarthy decision had included former Cowboys stars Deion Sanders and Jason Witten, but neither ultimately received serious consideration.
While some tabbed another familiar face, Eagles’ offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, as the favorite to land the job in Big D, Jones decided to go with Schottenheimer.
The move has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning whether the Cowboys’ leadership has permanently lost its touch.
FS1’s Colin Cowherd didn’t hold back in his critique, saying, “We are watching the fall of a great American institution.”
Cowherd claimed the fact that Schottenheimer wasn’t considered to be a candidate elsewhere around the league was quite telling. “He’s not even interviewing for other jobs…never been a head coach but Jerry [Jones] likes him.”
Cowherd’s comments reflect growing frustration among Cowboys supporters who recall the team’s dominance decades ago, when they were perennial Super Bowl contenders.
We all know those “glory days” were a very long time ago.
What are your thoughts on Dallas’ decision to hire Schottenheimer? … Do you agree with Cowherd’s harsh assessment of the franchise???
