ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter found himself in hot water with his wife, Sharri Maio, after a revealing comment he made on Kevin Clark’s “This Is Football” podcast.
Schefter recalled an awkward situation where he broke a major news story while in a compromising position, sparking a flurry of texts – including one from his wife.
The comment that set off the chain of events occurred when Clark asked Schefter about the “weirdest place” he had ever broken a news story.
Schefter responded with a chuckle, recounting an incident from his time reporting on the Denver Broncos.
“I can remember being in Denver one time,” Schefter said with a smirk. “I was um … How do I say this? I had just spent time with this woman for the first time and got a text that [former Broncos cornerback] Dale Carter was being suspended for eight games for substance abuse.
“So, as I continued to lay there, confirm it, and got the job done Kevin – in every which way.”
The comment quickly gained traction on social media, with many fans reacting to the candid and NSFW revelation.
However, Schefter later clarified the situation on X, stating that he broke the news after the encounter, not during it.
In an appearance on WEEI’s 93.7 FM, Schefter shared his surprise at the viral reaction.
“All day long I’ve been responding to texts about this, including my wife this afternoon,” Schefter said, laughing.
“My wife didn’t appreciate the story as much as other people, I’d say. I should point that out. Some people enjoy it – my wife, not as much.”
Schefter was asked to comment on the message from his wife, but he laughed and shrugged it off. “I don’t know what to say… What do you want me to say?” he said.
Despite the uproar, Schefter admitted that he was “completely shocked” by how widely the story spread.
“I said what I said, right?” he remarked, still laughing at the attention his comment had drawn.
Schefter’s anecdote stemmed from an incident in 2000, when Dale Carter was suspended for eight games for a substance-abuse violation.
At the time, Schefter was working for the Denver Post. He and Maio, whom he married in 2007, share a daughter. Maio also has a son from a previous relationship.
What are your thoughts on Schefter’s (honest) revelation???
