With the abrupt retirement of Derek Carr, the New Orleans Saints suddenly find themselves without a proven quarterback – and former Pro Bowler turned analyst Robert Griffin III has a bold solution: bring in Aaron Rodgers.
Speaking on his Outta Pocket podcast, Griffin made an emphatic case for the Saints to pursue the 41-year-old free-agent quarterback, who is still unsigned following an injury-shortened stint with the New York Jets.
“The New Orleans Saints, Kellen Moore, Mickey Loomis, they need to call Aaron Rodgers,” Griffin said.
“Not for Mickey Loomis, not for Kellen Moore. But they need to call Aaron Rodgers for Alvin Kamara, for Demario Davis, for Cam Jordan, for Brandin Cooks, for Justin Reed, for Tyrann Mathieu. Those veterans don’t have time for a rebuild.”
With Carr walking away from the game, the Saints are left with a quarterback room composed of rookie Tyler Shough, second-year QB Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener, who has thrown just 38 passes in his career.
None of the three has won an NFL game.
That glaring lack of experience has sparked concerns about whether the Saints can realistically compete in 2025 – especially with a roster full of veterans still performing at a high level.
“There’s no time to wait around and figure out who your guy is,” Griffin added. “If you want to contend now, if you want to win now – Aaron Rodgers is your guy.”
Carr’s retirement frees up $30 million in cap space, creating a window for the Saints to re-enter the quarterback market. While the Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly shown the most interest in Rodgers this offseason, no deal has been finalized.
If the Saints move quickly, they could present a compelling alternative – offering Rodgers a chance to join a playoff-ready roster in a winnable NFC South.
Of course, signing Rodgers doesn’t come without concerns.
He’s now 41 and coming off an Achilles tear that limited him to just one series in 2023. His MVP-caliber days may be behind him, and any contract would likely be short-term and expensive – potentially delaying the development of a young QB like Shough.
But Griffin argues the Saints can’t afford to wait. “Call him,” he urged.
Rodgers has remained quiet since free agency opened in March, and while the Steelers have emerged as a frontrunner, New Orleans’ sudden need and available cap space could shift the narrative.
The Saints face a decision: trust an untested trio of quarterbacks, or take a swing on one of the most decorated passers in NFL history.
What are your thoughts on Griffin’s suggestion that the Saints should go after Rodgers???
