Big changes are on the horizon for North Carolina’s revered athletic department as it gears up for a major transition. The Tar Heels’ stalwart athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, has announced his plan to step down in the summer of 2026, passing the baton to Steve Newmark. Known for his tenure as the president of Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, Newmark will soon steer the ship of Carolina Athletics.
Reflecting on his upcoming departure, Cunningham has expressed pride in the chance to support the Tar Heel community. “As part of my last contract extension, I committed to shaping a succession plan with the university leadership,” Cunningham shared. His goal? To position Carolina Athletics and all of its 28 teams for a future filled with promise. “I’m thrilled to continue supporting our student-athletes, coaches, and staff as we navigate this ever-evolving athletics landscape,” he added.
Newmark, a lifelong Tar Heels enthusiast, is eager to join the team and strengthen its legacy as a collegiate powerhouse. He noted, “For me, following UNC Athletics has always been about more than just the game—it’s part of a family tradition.” With his roots deeply embedded in the Tar Heel community, Newmark is set to elevate UNC’s status as a premier brand in college sports. He’s particularly cognizant of the shifting tides in the athletics realm, emphasizing, “UNC is in a prime position to seize the opportunities presented by these massive changes.”
Bubba Cunningham isn’t just disappearing from the scene, though. He will remain as a senior advisor, a role from which he will undoubtedly continue to influence the program he’s served since 2011. It’s a role that has witnessed significant achievements, not least the bold move of recruiting the legendary Bill Belichick. Yes, you read that right—Belichick, famed for his NFL success with the New England Patriots, is now at the helm of the Tar Heels football program. With his first season on the horizon, the excitement is palpable.
Cunningham’s knack for strategic hires also brought Hubert Davis into the fold for the basketball program. Stepping into the shoes of legend Roy Williams after he retired in 2021, Davis has already led the Tar Heels to a national championship game. While the coveted title remains elusive for Davis, the pieces are undoubtedly in place for future triumphs.
Under Cunningham’s steady leadership, North Carolina has bagged multiple national championships across various sports, underscoring the profound impact he’s had on shaping the university’s athletic narrative. As this chapter closes and another begins with Newmark at the helm, the UNC community can look forward to a bright and dynamic future filled with potential.
