When we talk about the most underrated receivers in NFL history, it’s hard to overlook Steve Smith Sr. At first glance, it might seem surprising to label a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro as underrated. Yet, considering he ranks eighth all-time in receiving yards and isn’t enshrined in the Hall of Fame, it’s clear that some of that disrespect lurks in the shadows.
For context, every other eligible receiver ahead of him in the rankings has already received their gold jacket, which adds an intriguing layer to Smith’s legacy.
Fast forward to 2017, during Cooper Kupp’s entrance into the NFL draft. Smith boldly declared Kupp as the best receiver in his class, a hot take that elicited laughter from critics. Despite assessments pointing to Kupp’s lack of speed and explosiveness, Smith recognized his exceptional route-running prowess and tremendous college production as indicators of future success.
Now, several years later, it’s safe to say that Smith’s instincts were spot on. The wide receivers selected before Kupp—like Corey Davis, Mike Williams, and others—have put together solid careers, averaging 326 catches and 3,662 yards. In contrast, Kupp has doubled those numbers.
With his recent move to the Seattle Seahawks, Kupp is stepping into a key role following the departures of established stars DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. At 32, and after facing some injury challenges, questions about his effectiveness naturally arise. However, early reports from the Seahawks’ OTAs suggest he’s back to operating at full strength. While that doesn’t guarantee stellar performance throughout the season, it’s certainly a positive sign that sets the stage for his potential impact.
While we may not see the 2021 version of Kupp, who had one of the finest seasons by a receiver in league history, his production when healthy in the last few years remains impressive. Even considering he’s only played 33 games in the past three seasons, he’s still on pace for about 100 catches and 1,000 yards over a full season.
If Kupp can harness that production in Klint Kubiak’s offense, it could transform Seattle’s offensive capabilities. Pairing him with rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba means the Seahawks will field two savvy, accomplished route runners who can adapt to various alignments. Kupp’s versatility means he can operate as a big slot receiver now, while Smith-Njigba, who shifts from a primarily slot role to a classic X-receiver spot, will suit the dynamic well.
In two-tight end sets, which the Seahawks are likely to utilize frequently, there’s enough flexibility for either receiver to line up outside the formation. Add a deep threat like Marquez Valdes-Scantling or Tory Horton into the mix, and Kupp or Smith-Njigba can easily shift into the slot.
The true advantage here for Seattle is having two receivers adept at finding ways to get open, regardless of the defensive coverage. If Kupp and Smith-Njigba can establish a rhythm with quarterback Sam Darnold, Kubiak’s scheme will keep defenses guessing. They’ll exploit weaker zones underneath while targeting vulnerabilities downfield.
Kubiak’s offense isn’t just about the wide receivers, either. The tight ends play a crucial role, with Noah Fant or rookie Elijah Arroyo looking to run seam routes, while A.J. Barner positions himself as a safety valve with short crossing patterns or flat routes.
However, the two-man game on the outside with Kupp and Smith-Njigba will be essential. Their ability to connect for big plays opens up opportunities to maintain two tight ends on the field, which not only bolsters the run game but also solidifies pass protection.
Today’s NFL favors three-receiver sets, even for teams inclined to establish the run. Just look at the Baltimore Ravens, who have faced their share of struggles due to a lack of reliable receivers during pivotal moments, despite their emphasis on a strong ground game.
As Seattle gears up this season, the focus turns to the health and performance of Cooper Kupp. Signs thus far indicate that they’re on the right path, and if he can stay healthy, the Seahawks could be in for an exciting offensive campaign.
