Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was clear this week: there’s no quarterback controversy brewing with Sam Darnold at the helm. Speaking on Seattle Sports 710-AM, the second-year coach swiftly put to rest any doubts about the $100 million acquisition losing his starting position before the upcoming season, stating flatly, “No, you guys are crazy.”
Macdonald’s emphatic response came after a roller-coaster performance from Darnold at recent OTAs, where he faced some adversity by tossing two interceptions in quick succession. However, the coach underscored that it’s far too early for panic alarms in June, with three months remaining until the regular season kicks off.
“God forbid you’re the worst player of all time because you made one bad throw or one bad decision,” Macdonald asserted. He emphasized a supportive environment, one where players are encouraged to prepare thoroughly and then take risks during practice without the fear of permanent consequences. “They’re going to get plenty of reps. We’ll get those things fixed,” he remarked, focusing on development rather than dwelling on mistakes.
Darnold, 27, is stepping into his new role in Seattle after what many would consider a standout year with the Minnesota Vikings, where he earned his first Pro Bowl selection. During that time, he tossed a remarkable 35 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions, leading the Vikings to a postseason appearance. However, the playoffs were a different story; the Vikings were handed a tough defeat by the Rams, in which Darnold was sacked nine times, throwing one touchdown and one interception in that game.
As the Seahawks transition from last season’s starter, Geno Smith, who was traded to the Raiders after a 10-7 campaign that ended short of the playoffs, Darnold carries the weight of high expectations in the Pacific Northwest. While the commitment to Darnold is strong, the Seahawks have also positioned themselves with a $37.5 million escape clause should they need to reassess their options after this season.
Adding depth to their quarterback room, the Seahawks also bring back Drew Lock, who has rejoined the team after his time with the Giants, along with rookie Jalen Milroe, taken in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft from Alabama.
The Seahawks are gearing up to see Darnold lead them when they face off against the San Francisco 49ers in their season opener on September 7. With Macdonald’s confidence and support behind him, the question remains: will Darnold find his groove and thrive in Seattle? Fans will be watching closely.
