The Minnesota Vikings have already spoken with quarterback Aaron Rodgers – and they aren’t ruling out doing it again.
Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah confirmed today that Rodgers and head coach Kevin O’Connell had multiple discussions, leading to internal conversations within the organization about the four-time MVP.
“It’s a new thing to talk about a player at that caliber,” Adofo-Mensah said of the future Hall of Famer. “And I’m always somebody who wants to learn and grow myself and so just being involved in those dialogue[s] was really special.”
Despite already having rookie J.J. McCarthy and veteran Brett Rypien on the roster, Adofo-Mensah made it clear that Minnesota isn’t shutting the door on Rodgers just yet.
“For me to sit here and say that anything’s 100 percent forever, that’s just not the job,” Adofo-Mensah said.
“We’re responding to scenarios and different information as it comes. So obviously things can change, but right now we’re really happy with our [quarterback] room and we’re going to look to upgrade it in different ways.”
That upgrade may come after April 29, the deadline for free-agent signings to count toward the compensatory draft pick formula.
According to ESPN, the Vikings appear inclined to wait until after that date before making further moves at quarterback.
Minnesota’s options remain open, with veterans like Ryan Tannehill, Joe Flacco, and Carson Wentz still available.
Tannehill, having been a free agent for over a year, could be signed immediately without impacting the team’s compensatory pick calculations.
Rodgers, who was released by the New York Jets rather than hitting free agency through contract expiration, would also not count against the formula.
Whether the Vikings ultimately decide to fully dive back into the Rodgers hunt remains to be seen. But by all accounts, it seems like Minnesota is Rodgers’ preferred destination.
With the Vikings’ admission that they’re not closing the door on the possibility of adding the four-time MVP, we could see Rodgers back in the NFC North after all.
