After a lengthy and impactful 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is set to don new colors as he joins the Seattle Seahawks on a three-year contract. This deal is particularly notable, with $18 million guaranteed and the potential to reach up to $42 million. The news broke from reliable sources, marking a significant shift for both Lawrence and the Seahawks.

Seattle has faced its share of challenges on the edge, especially following the release of Dre’Mont Jones. In recognition of their needs, they are also in talks with outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu regarding a restructured deal that would help minimize his hefty $21 million cap hit. Clearly, the Seahawks are making adjustments as they look to fortify their defense.

One of the intriguing aspects of Lawrence’s move is his reunion with Aden Durde, who previously served as the Cowboys’ defensive line coach. Durde has transitioned to coordinating Seattle’s defense under Mike Macdonald, bringing a sense of familiarity that could be beneficial for all parties involved.

In the previous season, Lawrence faced challenges of his own, appearing in just four games due to a right midfoot sprain sustained in a matchup against the New York Giants. His injury forced him to be placed on injured reserve, and with the Cowboys finishing their season at 7-10, it didn’t make practical sense for him to return late in the year. During his limited appearances, Lawrence recorded 14 tackles, 3 sacks, and 8 quarterback pressures, showing glimpses of his potential impact on the field.

At 32 years old, Lawrence has established himself as one of the premier two-way defensive ends in the league. His impact goes beyond no. of sacks; he’s known for his ability to defend against the run as well as disrupt passing plays. In 2019, he signed what was then the richest contract for a defensive player in Cowboys history, a five-year deal worth $105 million guaranteed, following standout seasons where he recorded 14.5 and 10.5 sacks in consecutive years. However, it’s worth noting that post-signature, Lawrence never eclipsed 6.5 sacks in a season. Nevertheless, his contributions have been multifaceted, with coaches consistently praising his effectiveness beyond merely rushing the passer.

When we assess Lawrence’s overall performance in his career, he boasts 61.5 sacks over 11 NFL seasons, a testament to his durability and skill. Now, as he embarks on this new chapter with the Seahawks, all eyes will be on how he adapts and makes an impact in Seattle, and if he can regain the form that once made him a household name among defensive stars. The anticipation builds; will Lawrence shine bright amid the Pacific Northwest, becoming a cornerstone of a defense looking to assert itself in the competitive NFC? Time will tell.
