In one of the biggest stories of the early NFL offseason, Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver DK Metcalf has officially requested a trade.
Metcalf, who has spent six seasons with the Seahawks and become one of the NFL’s most dynamic receivers, appears eager to move on from Seattle.
Interestingly, the Los Angeles Chargers have emerged as an extremely strong contender to land Metcalf.
The Bolts, who made the playoffs last season for the second time in three years, have reportedly pursued Metcalf in the past.
According to FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Chargers were actively involved in trade discussions for Metcalf dating back to last offseason, though Seattle rebuffed their advances.
“Sources: DK Metcalf is expected to draw interest from multiple teams, but dating back to last offseason, the #Chargers were the one team that quietly but aggressively pursued him in trade talks—only to be rebuffed by Seattle. The Chargers remain in the receiver market this offseason.” Schultz reported on X.
In addition, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that the Chargers are indeed a strong team to watch in connection with Metcalf, especially since they’re now getting another crack at him.
The Chargers’ need for a top-tier wide receiver has been evident for some time, especially heading into last season.
However, the emergence of rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who has shown star potential, along with decent improvement from Quentin Johnston, has improved the Chargers’ receiving corps.
Still, acquiring Metcalf would be a major game-changer for Jim Harbaugh’s team.
Metcalf would provide Justin Herbert with the deep threat the Chargers’ offense has been lacking.
His ability to stretch the field could make a huge impact, especially after the Chargers’ offense became more predictable at times during their playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
Of course, the Chargers are not alone with their interest in Metcalf. The Pittsburgh Steelers are thought to be right in the thick of things as well.
Seattle is reportedly asking for trade package involving both a 1st and 3rd round pick. (Quite hefty to say the least.)
In addition, Metcalf will be asking his new team for a contract extension which averages at least $30 million per season.
At the end of the day, where do you think Metcalf will end up? … Are the Chargers indeed the favorites to land him???
