Authorities have officially determined the cause of death for three Kansas City Chiefs fans who were found lifeless in a friend’s backyard following a postseason game last year.
In January 2024, Clayton McGeeney, David Harrington, and Ricky Johnson gathered at a Kansas City-area home to watch a Chiefs playoff game together.
Days later, their bodies were discovered in the backyard, initially believed to have succumbed to freezing temperatures.
Now, investigators have ruled that their deaths were caused by a lethal combination of cocaine and fentanyl.
Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd confirmed the findings on Wednesday and announced criminal charges related to the case.
Authorities have arrested two men, Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson, in connection with the deaths.
Both are facing multiple charges, including three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivery of a controlled substance.
TMZ shared further details on the disturbing situation…
“Officials in Platte County, Missouri announced this week that Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson have been hit with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivery of a controlled substance … after investigators say the two contributed to the deaths of Clayton McGeeney, David Harrington and Ricky Johnson back in January 2024 … Carson has already been booked into a county jail on the charges … while Zahnd said he’s anticipating Willis will turn himself in soon.” -TMZ
Needless to say, the news has done little to ease the grief of the victims’ families, many of whom feel they’ve been left in the dark throughout the investigation.
Harrington’s mother, Theresa, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from authorities.
“They wouldn’t tell me anything,” she told the Daily Mail, adding that officials repeatedly insisted they were not treating the deaths as homicides.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s father, Rick, has vowed to attend every court proceeding for Willis and Carson.
“I am happy with the Platte County Prosecutor’s Office and the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department for filling charges,” Rick told Fox 4 Kansas City. “It’s been a long time. And I’ll be at every court date.”
Still, Theresa Harrington remains skeptical about how long justice will take.
“[I] still don’t know anything about how my son died or his last moments,” she said, believing the trial could take over a year to begin.
With fentanyl-related deaths on the rise, law enforcement officials are emphasizing the extreme dangers of street drugs.
“This case is a tragic reminder of the dangers of street drugs,” Zahnd said. “But make no mistake, the people who supply those drugs can and will be held accountable when people overdose.”
Theresa Harrington acknowledged her son had used drugs but insisted he never intended to put himself in danger.
“He didn’t take that to die,” she told NewsNation back in February 2024. “If he took the drugs on his own, he took them to get high. It just means that there’s more to the story, there’s more to it than just that.”
The case remains ongoing as prosecutors move forward with charges against the two suspects.
